    How Loyalty Points Work

Loyalty Points determine your path to AAdvantage elite status: Gold (40,000 LP), Platinum (75,000 LP), Platinum Pro (125,000 LP), or Executive Platinum (200,000 LP).

American Airlines flights: Earn 5 LP per dollar spent on the ticket (Basic Economy: 2 LP per dollar). Status bonuses on base miles: Gold +40%, Platinum +60%, Platinum Pro +80%, Executive Platinum +120%.

Partner flights: Often earn based on distance flown × fare class multiplier, with cabin bonuses and status bonuses varying by airline.

British Airways fees can be high

AAdvantage® awards on British Airways often include higher carrier imposed fees. For Europe trips, compare British Airways with Iberia or Finnair to see if taxes and fees are lower.
