It depends on who markets the ticket and which accrual model applies. American Airlines® marketed tickets usually earn 5 miles per dollar before taxes and fees, with Basic Economy often at 2 miles per dollar. Elite status adds a bonus on base miles: Gold 40%, Platinum 60%, Platinum Pro 80%, Executive Platinum 120%. Eligible AAdvantage® miles post as one Loyalty Point per mile. Many partners use distance based earning. In those cases the calculator multiplies flown miles by the fare class percentage, adds any class of service bonus, and applies any status bonus on base miles when allowed. Which partner airlines earn AAdvantage® Loyalty Points and which do not?

Most oneworld® partners earn Loyalty Points when the fare and route are eligible. Examples include British Airways, Iberia, Finnair, Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways, GOL, and JetSMART. Some partners do not award Loyalty Points on their own marketing. Examples include China Southern, Etihad, and Hawaiian marketed tickets. Hawaiian also has routes between the U.S. mainland and Hawaii that do not earn AAdvantage® miles. If a flight is American Airlines® marketed and operated by a partner, earnings usually follow American's revenue rules and Loyalty Points are eligible.

Revenue based means miles are tied to ticket price that excludes government taxes and fees and usually includes carrier imposed fees. Example: a 500 dollar American Airlines® fare earns 2,500 base miles for a member without status. Distance based means miles are tied to great circle miles between airports multiplied by fare class and any class of service bonuses. Example: a 4,000 mile partner flight at 100% base with a 50% cabin bonus yields 6,000 miles before any status bonus. Often yes. On American Airlines® Basic Economy typically earns 2 miles per dollar and status bonuses still apply to base miles. A quick rule of thumb: compute cents per mile as (cash price minus award taxes) divided by miles used, times 100. If your result is at or above your personal benchmark, using miles is likely a good deal.
