Alaska Saver Fares: No Miles Earned After Aug 1
Alaska Airlines is cutting Atmos Rewards earning on Saver fares to zero from August 1. Here's what changes, what's grandfathered, and what to do about it.
Alaska just made a big change to how Saver fares earn - or rather, stop earning - Atmos Rewards points and status credit. If you book cheaper X class fares on Alaska regularly, this is worth knowing.
What's Changing
The new earning rules on Saver fares (X class) break down like this:
| Booking date | Travel date | Earns? |
|---|---|---|
| Any | Through July 31, 2026 | Yes - 30% of miles flown |
| Before June 11, 2026 | August 1, 2026 or later | Yes - 30% of miles flown |
| June 11, 2026 or later | August 1, 2026 or later | No - zero points or status credit |
TLDR: if you book a Saver fare on or after June 11 for travel on or after August 1, you earn nothing.
There's one carve-out worth noting: Saver fares will still count toward Million Miler lifetime miles at 100% of miles flown, regardless of when they're booked or traveled. They just won't earn you anything in the near term.

What It Means in Practice
Saver fares are Alaska's cheapest booking class. They've always earned at a reduced rate (30% of miles flown rather than 100%+), so they were already the least rewarding way to book. Unfortunately this change removes even that reduced earning for future bookings.

The Bigger Picture
This "devaluation' follows a trend that's been playing out across US carriers for a while - basic and saver economy fares getting stripped of earnings and benefits as airlines try to push passengers toward higher fare classes. Delta did it with Basic Economy, American has restrictions on their cheapest fares, and now Alaska is tightening things up on their Saver class fares.
This doesn't make Saver fares useless. If the price difference is large enough and you don't need the miles, a Saver fare may be the best option. But it changes the earning conversation who's been booking Saver fares while assuming the points were part of the value.
