American Airlines Raises Bag Fees and Tightens Basic Economy - What Status Holders Need to Know
AA raised bag fees $10 on April 9. From May 18, status holders lose upgrades and seat selection on Basic Economy fares. What changes and what doesn't.
American Airlines announced today a $10 increase to checked bag fees on domestic and short-haul international flights, effective for tickets purchased from April 9. A second wave of changes hits Basic Economy fares starting May 18, including a restriction that will affect AAdvantage status holders for the first time.
AA is the latest in a string of increases across the industry - Delta, United, Southwest, and JetBlue all raised bag fees in the past week, with fuel costs from Middle East airspace disruptions cited as the driver.
The New Bag Fees
For tickets purchased on or after April 9:
| Prepay online | At airport | |
|---|---|---|
| 1st checked bag | $45 | $50 |
| 2nd checked bag | $55 | $60 |
| 3rd checked bag | $200 | $200 |
The previous rate was $40 first bag and $50 second bag at the airport - this is a $10 increase across the board, and a $50 jump on the third bag from $150.
For context, AA raised fees twice in recent memory: to $35/$45 before February 2026, then to $40/$50 in February. Today's hike is the third increase in a short window.
Basic Economy domestic bags go up further on May 18 - $50/$60 prepay, $55/$65 at airport - making them $5 more expensive than standard Main Cabin fares. AA is the first major U.S. carrier to charge more for bags on Basic Economy fares versus standard economy tickets.
For Status Holders: The Free Bag Benefit Holds
The headline for AAdvantage members is that free checked bags are unchanged. All status holders - Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, and Executive Platinum - continue to receive complimentary bags on all American flights. AAdvantage co-branded credit cardholders also retain their first free bag on domestic itineraries.
If your free bag benefit covers you, today's announcement doesn't affect what you pay. The fee increases land entirely on passengers without status or a qualifying card.

The Basic Economy Change That Does Affect Status Holders
Starting May 18, the Basic Economy restrictions tighten in a way that will directly impact AAdvantage elites for the first time.
For tickets purchased May 18 and beyond:
Seat selection: All passengers - including status holders - will be charged a fee to select a seat on Basic Economy tickets. Previously, AAdvantage status members could select seats at booking even on Basic Economy fares. That's gone.

Upgrades: Status members will no longer be eligible for complimentary upgrades or SWU redemptions on Basic Economy tickets. If you've been booking cheap Basic Economy fares and relying on your status to clear an upgrade or lock in a Main Cabin Extra seat, that combination will no longer work starting May 18.
On Main Cabin fares, nothing changes. Complimentary seat selection, upgrade eligibility, and free bags all remain intact.
The logic from AA's perspective is clear: Basic Economy is meant to be the lowest possible price point with the fewest benefits. Allowing status members to effectively convert Basic Economy fares into a near-Main Cabin experience via their status was an inconsistency the airline has now corrected.
Boarding: A Later Change
Later in 2026, AAdvantage members without status or a co-branded credit card will board Basic Economy fares in Group 7, rather than Group 6. Status holders and cardholders will keep their priority or preferred boarding even on Basic Economy tickets. While this change doesn't affect status members, it does add further separation between Basic Economy and Main Cabin.

The Broader Picture
Every major U.S. carrier has now raised bag fees in the past week. In fact Delta and Southwest matched AA's $45 prepay figure the same day. This is a coordinated industry response to fuel costs, not an AA-specific move - but that doesn't make the increases easier to absorb for passengers without the protection of elite status or a co-branded card.
For AAdvantage Gold members and above, the free bag benefit continues to be one of the most consistent value-generating perks in the program. At $45 per bag each way, two people checking bags on a round trip avoids $180 in fees per trip. That math only gets stronger as fees rise.
