American Airlines Is Getting Starlink in 2027

AA announced Starlink on its entire Airbus narrowbody fleet starting Q1 2027. Here's what that actually means for domestic passengers — and how it stacks up against what's already in the air.
American Airlines announced today that it's bringing Starlink to more than 500 narrowbody aircraft, starting in Q1 2027. The rollout covers AA's entire Airbus fleet — existing A321s, A320s, and new A321XLR and A321neo deliveries as they come in. This follows on the heels of American's launch of free wifi on most of their aircraft earlier this year.
This is a big deal for domestic travelers. Right now the Wi-Fi experience on AA's domestic Airbus aircraft ranges from mediocre to frustrating depending on the day, route and how many others are already online..
Starlink represents a big improvement.
What is Starlink
Starlink operates a low Earth orbit satellite constellation that's capable of delivering broadband internet to aircraft, via its Aero Terminal that supports up to 1 Gbps per antenna. This means streaming, video calls, and real-time collaboration tools actually work rather than buffer endlessly.
The difference between low Earth orbit and the older satellite systems isn't just speed, but rather latency. Geostationary satellites sit roughly 22,000 above the earth, which creates a noticeable lag. Starlink's LEO constellation in comparison sits at around 340 miles above earth, which cuts that latency. It's a reason why Qatar's Starlink-equipped aircraft feel different to use rather than just faster on a speed test.
What's Changing and When
The rollout covers AA's fleet of more than 500 Airbus aircraft, including new A321XLR and A321neo deliveries, with installation beginning in Q1 2027. No specific completion timeline was given. Like other airlines rolling out the product, you won't necessarily know if you have Starlink until you're on board.
What AA hasn't announced is if the Starlink rollout comes with any changes to the free Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members. My guess is not, due to some of Starlink's requirements around sign in portals and similar for those offering their product on aircraft.
The Competitive Context
Delta and United have both been moving on connectivity upgrades too. Delta has Viasat on much of its domestic fleet and has been rolling out free Wi-Fi for SkyMiles members. United has been upgrading its narrowbody fleet as well. The domestic connectivity race has been heating up for a couple of years and the gap between carriersis closing.
AA choosing Starlink specifically is a statement. It's the same system that's drawing strong reviews on Qatar and is currently being rolled out on British Airways.
In a lot of ways this is a continuation of AA's pivot back towards a more premium offering. Maybe seatback entertainment will be next?
Stay Tuned
The rollout won't happen overnight. 500+ aircraft is a lot of installs and work isn't slated to begin until Q1 2027. Recent changes have shown what free, fast Wi-Fi does for the onboard experience at AA. It's great to see American making more an effort to improve the passenger experience.
