    The Booking Story

    This flight started as a connecting itinerary. When American loaded a schedule change that affected the original routing, the rebook placed us on the direct DCA–LAX service instead - an exceptional value for the 18,500-mile price we'd already paid.

    DCA Pre-Departure

    It was a busy and hot July evening at National. The security line was long considering the holiday weekend but TSA's touchless ID skipped the document check and allowed us to bypass the regular TSA Precheck line.

    We had some time before departure and made a stop at the Lego model of the Reagan National terminal - a 150,000-piece replica built by DC-based builder Richard Paules and installed in the main concourse across from the Lego store. Full background on the build here.

    The Aircraft

    Today's aircraft was registration N310UM, a 737-8 MAX about a year old. One honest note: new planes don't have broken-in seats. The seats didn't have the miles on them that softened things which was slightly noticeable on the five-plus hour transcon.

    The cabin itself featured a 16-seat first class cabin. On such a popular route, and a holiday weekend, unsurprisingly no one on the upgrade list cleared. We opted for seats 2A and 2B.

    AA's first class recliner offered on domestic flights is pretty standard, although not as tricked out as some of the seats offered by their US competitors.

    Departure

    We pushed back 27 minutes late due to a late-arriving captain and first officer. We took off on Runway 19 heading south, meaning no Potomac River and monuments view on departure. Heading south we flew over Old Town Alexandria before making a right turn west, tracking past a hazy Dulles a few miles to the north before heading out over Virginia.

    Service

    A full choice of pre-departure beverages were on the ground. The first class cabin was led by Sarah, who was friendly and attentive throughout the flight.

    Once at cruise, a warm towel and the printed menu followed. Then a second round of beverages came through alongside warmed mixed nuts - with refills proactively offered.

    The printed menu is a relatively recent addition to AA's domestic first class service. It's a small change that does make things feel a little more premium.

    The Food

    American Airlines offers a wider pre-order menu available from 30 days to 24 hours before your flight. For those who didn't preorder, the menu presented two choices: Chicken Enchiladas or Paneer Makani.

    The meal began with a small plate of Carrot Cashew Hummus along with seasonal greens. A choice of bread to accompany your entree was also offered.

    I opted for the Paneer Makani, pre-ordered before the flight. Indian dishes tend to travel well at altitude and this one was quite good. The other main option was enchiladas, though at least one passenger behind us complained that both options were sauce-heavy and wasn't very pleased. The crew quickly offered them a cheese plate or sandwich from the economy buy-on-board item as an alternative. That spoke a lot about the quality of the crew on this flight.

    Dessert included three options: cheese plate, chocolate lava cake with ice cream, or the signature sundae. I chose the build your own sundae with hot fudge and whipped cream for the full production.

    IFE and Wi-Fi

    The 737-8 doesn't have seatback screens meaning entertainment is stream-to-device through the AA app or browser on your own phone or tablet. A device holder can be found on the seat in front of you and the content library is solid with a wide enough selection to fill a five-hour transcon.

    Free Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members was also offered during flight. It was the same story as previous AA flights this year: fast enough to work and stream without interruption.

    The View West

    We experienced cloud cover over much of the middle of the country but this broke south of Las Vegas. In the distance, through the haze, the Sphere was visible - a glowing orb on the eastern edge of the Strip faintly recognizable against the desert floor.

    Closer to Los Angeles, the sky turned. We had some nice views before we descended below the cloud layer into the LA Basin.

    The final descent tracked past SoFi Stadium before turning for the runway.

    Arrival at LAX

    We touched down about 24 minutes late, landing at the Tom Brady International Terminal - the renamed former Terminal B, while Terminal 4 remains under construction. From there a bus transfer to Terminal 6 for the next connection.

    Final Thoughts

    18,500 miles for a direct DCA–LAX first class seat was an exceptional redemption. A relatively new aircraft, fantastic crew, and AA's famous sundae made it even better. We arrived in Los Angeles ready for the next leg of the trip - although our next Alaska flight wouldn't go completely to plan…
