AA operates 777s and 787s on a handful of domestic routes giving you access to lie-flat Flagship Business seats and Premium Economy on flights that never leave US airspace. Here's every route operating in July 2026 and how to find them.
One of the more underappreciated quirks of American Airlines' domestic operation is that on certain routes, you can board a widebody aircraft - the same 777 or 787 that flies to London or Tokyo - and never leave the country. Lie-flat Flagship Business seats on a two-hour hop from Miami to Charlotte. Premium Economy between Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Why AA Flies Widebodies Domestically
The short answer is aircraft positioning. AA's widebody aircraft need to be in specific cities to operate their international departures, and those positioning flights create domestic itinerary options that wouldn't otherwise exist. A 777 flying Miami–Charlotte in the morning might be heading to Europe that evening. The domestic leg generates revenue on what would otherwise be a deadhead.
What You Actually Get
Flagship Business: The lie-flat seats. On domestic widebody routes these are the same Concept D, Super Diamond or (on newer 787-9P aircraft) Flagship Suite seats that fly to Europe and Asia. On a two-hour domestic flight you're not going to sleep, but you're getting a significantly wider seat, built in IFE, and more personal space. Meal service on domestic widebody routes varies - shorter domestic hops typically get snack basket service rather than a full meal, similar to what you'd find on any domestic first class.

Premium Economy: This is the one that makes domestic widebody routes interesting for status holders and savvy bookers. AA's Premium Economy cabin is sold on these domestic routes as Main Cabin Extra. The seat is wider than domestic first class on a narrowbody, with more recline, a proper footrest, and more personal space. It's a great way to travel across the country for the price of an economy ticket.

Hawaii routes (DFW–HNL and HNL–DFW) are technically domestic flights and operate on widebody equipment year-round - those are good options if Hawaii is on the itinerary.
How to Find These Flights When Booking
The AA cargo schedule site aacargo.com/ship/schedules.html is the most reliable way to check which routes are operating on widebody equipment for a given month. The aircraft codes to look for are 772 (777-200), 788 (787-8), and 789 (787-9). Check the schedule before booking rather than assuming — aircraft swaps happen, and not every date on a route operates with widebody equipment.
When searching on aa.com, you can also check the aircraft type listed in the flight details before booking. If it shows Boeing 777 or Boeing 787, you're on a widebody.
The Strategy Angle
For those with status, targeting these flights can be a good upgrade play due to the higher volume of premium seating. If you're Platinum or above and the business class upgrade list doesn't clear, at the least you can score a Premium Economy marketed as Main Cabin Extra. This is nearly an identical seat to what is provided in regular domestic First class, minus the meal service.
