Step-by-step guide to calculating AAdvantage loyalty points. Includes the exact formula, worked examples for different fare classes, and status tier multipliers.

Understanding how to calculate AAdvantage Loyalty Points is essential for planning your path to elite status. This guide breaks down the exact formulas American Airlines uses—whether you're flying on AA or partner airlines.

    What Are Loyalty Points?

Loyalty Points are the metric that determines your AAdvantage elite status. They are not spendable currency like miles. Their sole purpose is to track your progress toward:

    • Gold: 40,000 Loyalty Points
    • Platinum: 75,000 Loyalty Points
    • Platinum Pro: 125,000 Loyalty Points
    • Executive Platinum: 200,000 Loyalty Points

Loyalty Points reset each status year (March 1 – February 28), unlike redeemable miles which stay in your account.

    The Two Earning Methods

AAdvantage uses two different formulas depending on who markets your ticket:

    1. Revenue-based earning – for American Airlines marketed flights
    2. Distance-based earning – for most partner airline marketed flights

The marketing carrier (shown in your ticket number) determines which formula applies.

    Revenue-Based Formula (American Airlines Flights)

When you book directly with American Airlines, your Loyalty Points are tied to the ticket price.

    The Formula

    Formula: Loyalty Points = (Base Fare × Rate) × (1 + Status Bonus %)

    Where:

    • Base Fare = ticket price excluding government taxes and fees
    • Rate = 5 LP per dollar (or 2 LP per dollar for Basic Economy)
    • Status Bonus = Gold 40%, Platinum 60%, Platinum Pro 80%, Executive Platinum 120%

    Worked Example

A $600 ticket on American Airlines for a Platinum Pro member:

    Step Calculation Result
    Base earning $600 × 5 LP/$ 3,000 LP
    Status bonus 3,000 × 80% 2,400 LP
    Total 3,000 + 2,400 5,400 LP

    Basic Economy Note

Basic Economy fares earn at a reduced rate of 2 LP per dollar instead of 5. Status bonuses still apply.

    Distance-Based Formula (Partner Flights)

When flying on partner-marketed tickets (booked on Finnair.com, British Airways, Qatar, etc.), earning is based on flight distance.

    The Formula

Formula: Loyalty Points = (Distance × Fare Class %) + Cabin Bonus + Status Bonus

    Where:

    • Distance = great circle miles between airports
    • Fare Class % = varies by booking code (typically 25%–150%)
    • Cabin Bonus = additional miles for premium cabins (e.g., 50% of base for business class)
    • Status Bonus = percentage of base miles (when the partner allows it)

    Worked Example

A 4,100-mile flight JFK–HEL on Finnair in business class (J fare) for a Platinum Pro member:

    Step Calculation Result
    Base miles 4,100 × 100% 4,100 miles
    Cabin bonus 4,100 × 50% 2,050 miles
    Status bonus 4,100 × 80% 3,280 miles
    Total 4,100 + 2,050 + 3,280 9,430 LP

Note: Status bonuses on partner flights apply to base miles only, not cabin bonus.

    Which Partners Use Which Method?

    Earning Type Airlines
Revenue-based American Airlines marketed flights (AA ticket number)
Distance-based British Airways, Finnair, Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways, Iberia, Qantas, and most other partners
No Loyalty Points China Southern, Etihad, Hawaiian (select routes)

    Key Differences at a Glance

    Factor Revenue-Based (AA) Distance-Based (Partners)
Calculation basis Ticket price Miles flown
Basic Economy 2 LP/$ Often reduced or zero
Status bonus On base earnings On base miles only
    Predictability High Varies by partner

    Try the Calculator

Rather than calculating manually, use the AAdvantage Loyalty Points Calculator to:

    • See exactly how many LP any flight will earn
    • Compare AA vs partner marketing options
    • Factor in your current elite status

The calculator automatically applies the correct formula based on your selections.
