Spirit Airlines Shutdown: Rescue Fares Roundup

Spirit Airlines is done. The carrier announced early Saturday that it had "started an orderly wind-down of operations, effective immediately," after efforts to obtain a $500 million federal bailout stalled. Every flight was canceled with almost no notice. Passengers arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport were still being dropped off for flights that no longer existed — learning only at curbside that Spirit had shut down overnight.
Spirit's collapse marks the first time in 25 years a major U.S. airline has gone out of business due to financial troubles. The carrier had been heavily reliant on Fort Lauderdale as its primary hub, and collapsed after surging jet fuel costs — driven by the ongoing conflict in Iran — made continued operations financially impossible.
The good news, if you can call it that: the major carriers moved quickly. By Saturday morning, American, United, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, and Frontier had all filed rescue fares. None of them are quite as cheap as Spirit was, but they're dramatically better than paying last-minute walk-up prices. Here's exactly what each carrier is offering.
The Rescue Fares, Carrier by Carrier
| Airline | Fare | How Long | How to Book |
|---|---|---|---|
| JetBlue | $99 one-way | Through May 6 | jetblue.com or 1-800-JETBLUE |
| United | $199 most routes / $299 long-haul | Through May 16 | united.com/specialfares |
| Delta | Reduced fares, varies by market | 5 days from May 2 | delta.com |
| American | Reduced fares, varies by route | Limited time | aa.com |
| Southwest | Flat fares at airport counters | Through May 6 | Airport ticket counter only |
| Frontier | Up to 50% off base fares | Book by May 10, travel through Nov 19 | FlyFrontier.com, code: SAVENOW |
JetBlue — $99 fares + fare caps + 11 new routes from FLL
JetBlue made the most aggressive move of any carrier. The airline is offering $99 rescue fares to assist stranded travelers with immediate travel planned, capping fares to ensure affordable rebooking options remain available, and significantly expanding its presence at Fort Lauderdale with 11 new cities.
To access the $99 fares, travelers need proof of a valid Spirit itinerary for the same route, for travel through May 6, 2026. Call 1-800-JETBLUE if you're stranded and need help sorting it out.
JetBlue is also capping all Blue Basic fares at $299 on nonstop routes to and from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan that Spirit previously operated, with caps applying to new bookings made through May 8 for travel in the same window. The fare cap matters because it's not just for passengers with proof of cancellation — it's designed to keep prices from spiking for everyone on those routes as demand surges.
United — $199 caps, dedicated booking page, 2-week window
United capped most fares at $199 one-way, covering most cities Spirit flew from — notably Atlanta, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Newark, New Orleans, and Orlando. Rescue fares on longer flights are capped at no more than $299.
To qualify, Spirit customers can go to united.com/specialfares, enter their Spirit confirmation number and proof of purchase for travel between May 2 through May 16. Note that United is requiring customers to sign up for MileagePlus to access the special fares — a minor hoop, but worth knowing before you go to book.
Of all the carriers, United has the most generous booking window at two weeks. If you have Spirit travel coming up later in May, this is the one to check first.
Delta — reduced fares across domestic network and Latin America
Delta is offering reduced, nonrefundable fares in affected markets over the next five days to help travelers book last-minute travel, with availability even on flights that are close to full to provide more options even when space may be limited.
These options are available across all domestic markets where Spirit operates, including routes Delta serves nonstop and through one-stop connections via its hubs, and Delta has extended reduced fare options to all routes between the U.S. and Latin America where Spirit operates.
Delta hasn't published a single flat fare the way JetBlue and United have — availability and pricing vary by market. Book directly at delta.com and check both nonstop and connecting options.
American — rescue fares on overlapping routes, possible capacity additions
American operates in 70 of the 72 airports Spirit serves and covers 67 of their specific routes, making it uniquely positioned to absorb displaced passengers. The airline launched a dedicated page at aa.com showing rescue fares on nonstop routes that overlap with Spirit's former network.
American is also reviewing adding additional capacity, including flying bigger planes and adding more flights on routes Spirit used to fly. If you're flexible on timing, it may be worth checking back in a day or two as American potentially upgauges aircraft on high-demand routes.

Southwest — flat fares at airport ticket counters only
Southwest is participating, but with an important catch: special fares for Spirit travelers are available at Southwest ticket counters at departure airports for eligible routes through 11:59 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, May 6. These are not available online — you have to show up at the counter.
Spirit loyalists with Free Spirit Silver or Gold elite status can also match into Southwest's Rapid Rewards program with A-List status. If you have Spirit status and have been meaning to try Southwest anyway, that's a meaningful get.
Frontier — 50% off base fares through November
Frontier is taking a different approach — longer-term discounts rather than emergency caps. The airline is offering up to 50% off base fares across its network for travel through November 19. Customers can book by May 10 at FlyFrontier.com using promo code SAVENOW. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday travel qualifies for the full 50% off with a 21-day advance purchase; other days get 10% off with no advance purchase requirement.
What About Refunds?
Spirit said it would automatically process refunds for any flight purchased with a credit or debit card, and confirmed those had been completed. If you paid by card, you should see your money back.
The harder situation: Spirit said that compensation for guests who booked flights using a voucher, credit, or Free Spirit points "will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy process." If you were holding Spirit points or vouchers, that money is effectively stuck in the bankruptcy estate for now. Don't count on a quick resolution.
The Broader Picture
The rescue fares are real and worth using if you're stuck. But they're a short window. Most expire by May 6–8, with United the exception at May 16. If you have Spirit travel coming up, move now.
