A sneak preview of an around-the-world trip using airline miles, with upcoming travel to Japan, Doha, and Copenhagen. AAdvantage awards, premium cabins, lounges, and aviation experiences coming soon on Milesmate.

I've got an upcoming trip that pulls together a lot of what I enjoy most about miles and points travel: long-haul awards, new onboard hard products, top-tier lounges, and a few aviation-focused stops along the way. This is a sneak preview, not a full trip report, but it should give a sense of what's coming to the blog soon.

Several parts of this itinerary are flexible, and that's part of the fun of booking with flexible miles programs.

Starting with an AAdvantage Business Award to Tokyo

The trip kicks off with an American Airlines AAdvantage® award to Tokyo, booked for 60,000 miles. The current routing connects in New York (John F. Kennedy International Airport, JFK) and onward to Tokyo (Haneda Airport, HND).

Before the long-haul segment, I'll have time to visit the Soho Lounge at JFK, which is only second to the more exclusive first class Chelsea Lounge.

There's also some built-in flexibility here. If a last-minute Japan Airlines redemption opens up using AAdvantage miles, especially on the JAL A350-1000, I may pivot. That aircraft has set a very high bar, and it's always worth checking close to departure.

If the flight stays on American, the long-haul segment will be operated by a Boeing 787-9, featuring American's updated soft product. This includes upgraded amenities like a mattress pad and pajamas, part of the airline's broader premium refresh. The aircraft itself isn't new, but seeing how these changes feel in practice, and whether the service matches the enhancements, will be something I'll be watching closely.

Japan: Trains, Hotels, and Aviation Highlights

Arriving into Tokyo (Haneda Airport, HND), the plan is to use the Keikyū Airport Line, one of the most efficient ways to get from Haneda into the city. The stay in Tokyo will be at the Caption by Hyatt Kabutocho Tokyo, a newly opened property with solid points availability. Hyatt's Caption brand is still relatively new, and this location just opened, making it an interesting chance to see how the concept works in a dense, central Tokyo neighborhood.

On the aviation side, one of the highlights will be a visit to the JAL Sky Museum near Tokyo (Haneda Airport, HND). The museum offers a deeper look at Japan Airlines' history, operations, and fleet, and includes access to a hangar tour, to see aircraft up close and get a better sense of how JAL handles maintenance and training.

This leg will end at Tokyo (Narita International Airport, NRT), with a visit to the JAL First Class Lounge. Access here comes via oneworld Emerald status, a reminder of how valuable alliance status can be even when you're not flying first class. For more on earning status, see our guide on How Many Loyalty Points You Need for AAdvantage Status in 2026.

    Next Stop: Doha

From Japan, the journey continues to Doha (Hamad International Airport, DOH) on Qatar Airways, flying a 777-300ER (777W). Barring changes it will feature Qsuite, paired with Starlink Wi-Fi, which has been generating plenty of discussion lately. For more context on Qatar's connectivity, read about Qatar's Starlink and Cabin Noise Experience.

A visit to one of Qatar's premium lounges at DOH is part of the plan before heading into the city. The hotel stay will be at the Hyatt Oryx Doha, followed by time at Souq Waqif, one of Doha's most atmospheric areas and an easy place to spend an evening between flights.

The onward flight will be operated by a Boeing 787-9 featuring Qatar's mini-Qsuite configuration. It's a slightly different take on the product and something I'm curious to revisit. It will be the second of 3x 787-9s we enjoy on this trip around the world.

Wrapping Up in Copenhagen (and Chicago)

The final stop on the itinerary is Copenhagen (Copenhagen Airport, CPH). From there, the return journey begins with British Airways from Copenhagen to London (Heathrow Airport, LHR), followed by American Airlines from London to Chicago (O'Hare International Airport, ORD).

    Copenhagen Airport

If I'm lucky, I'll have enough time to sneak back into the Cathay First Lounge in London Heathrow Terminal 3 for a closer look. This remains one of the best oneworld lounges globally. For a detailed review, see our Cathay Pacific First Class Lounge at Heathrow T3 post.

My final long-haul segment is scheduled on the brand new American Airlines 787-9P with the Flagship Suite Preferred seat, in 1A, offering extra space and upgraded amenities. This is the newer version of the same aircraft type I'm taking on the JFK–HND segment earlier in the trip, which should make for an interesting comparison. For context on why seat selection matters, check out Not All Airplane Seats Are Created Equal.

It was a great example of deals offered by AAdvantage rewards with partner segments, with the final cost being a solid 57.5k AAdvantage miles.

The journey wraps up with a visit to the Flagship Lounge at ORD, a fitting way to end a long, multi-stop itinerary. I find this Flagship to be one of the best in American's network, particularly due to its lower traffic when compared to locations in Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) or Philadelphia (PHL).

What to Expect on the Blog

This trip will lead to several full posts, including:

    • American's 787-9 and 787-9P Flagship Suite Preferred premium experience
    • Lounge reviews at JFK, NRT, DOH, LHR, and ORD
    • Japan rail connections and airport access
    • A first look at a newly opened Hyatt booked on points
    • The JAL Sky Museum and hangar tour
    • Qatar's Starlink experience in real-world conditions

For now, this is just the preview. The detailed write-ups will follow soon. I hope this trip inspires you to do more with your miles!

For staying connected across multiple countries without paying $12/day in carrier fees, I use an eSIM like Ubigi—it worked seamlessly across Japan, Qatar, and Denmark on this exact trip.
