A personal roundup of the best frequent flyer award redemptions from 2025 — routes, programs, and the cents-per-mile value on each booking.

2025 was year of playing the schedule change game (and winning)

Looking back, it ended up being one of those years where the miles really did the heavy lifting. Some trips were planned months out (or on the day of ticket release as in the case for elusive JAL awards) while others improved dramatically thanks to schedule changes, aircraft swaps, or just paying attention. Not every redemption was perfect, but a few of them set the bar very high.

Here's a recap of my favorite redemptions from the year and the value I realized leveraging American Airline's AAdvantage Program.

Japan Airlines to Tokyo, with a leg on JAL's new A350

    DCA–BOS–NRT / HND–JFK–DCA

I started the year with a big one. Two round trip tickets in Japan Airlines business class to Tokyo, booked using AAdvantage miles. The original routing was solid, but by closely monitoring the rollout of Japan Airlines newest aircraft, the return ended up moving onto the flagship JAL A350-1000. That instantly raised expectations for the rest of the year.

The service, new suite with closing doors, and ground experience were on point, making my first visit to Japan one for the books.

This was a good reminder of how powerful flexibility can be when airlines adjust schedules. What started as a great redemption turned into something special.

Iberia A321XLR, first aircraft, first impression

    IAD–MAD

In April, I had the chance to try Iberia's new A321XLR on a transatlantic flight from Washington Dulles to Madrid. Even better, I ended up on aircraft registration EC-OIL, the first XLR ever delivered.

The 4:35 p.m. departure made for a short night, but for the chance to try a brand-new single-aisle business class product across the Atlantic, it was well worth it. Read my full Iberia A321XLR trip report for more details on the experience.

Madrid's status as an Iberia hub made it easy to continue my journey with a separate Iberia Express booking onto Casablanca for only $40.

Peak summer Italy, without peak summer prices

    DCA–ORD–NAP

This was one of the most satisfying redemptions of the year. Booked during peak summer travel, this Naples itinerary was originally priced at 58,000 miles per person, but later rebooked at 52,000 miles after availability improved.

Cash prices were pushing $5,000 per segment, making miles the clear winner. Naples provided a great entry point to Europe for our primary destination of Malta.

Transcon luck and a last taste of Flagship First to Los Angeles

    DCA–JFK–LAX

This booking evolved several times. Originally routed via RDU with a several hour connection, schedule changes enabled a self-service flight change. Among the options was the ability to switch to travel via JFK, which opened the door to American's premium-configured A321T with lie-flat seats in Business and First.

While originally booked into business, a $200 in-app upgrade made it possible to experience Flagship First before its discontinuation. While food and drinks are relatively comparable to Flagship Business, the First cabin offers a noticeably different onboard experience with 1-1 seating versus 2-2 in business class.

Finnair A350 business class, still excellent

    WAW–HEL–DFW–DCA

The final major redemption of the year was Finnair business class on the A350 with Airspace seats. This was my second time flying the product, and it impressed just as much as the first. In fact I opted for a routing via DFW to enjoy a few extra hours in flight versus the Helsinki-JFK option.

This reward was originally booked with the American Airlines segment (DFW to DCA) booking in economy class. A few weeks prior additional Finnair space opened up and which allowed for rebooking into Business Class for all legs.

Finnair's service is great and the Helsinki Airport transfer couldn't have gone smoother. This trip also gave me a chance to test Helsinki's famously fast transfers, which lived up to the hype.

The smaller wins: South Florida sweet spots

Not every good redemption needs to be international business class. South Florida quietly became a sweet spot this year, with economy redemptions to MIA and FLL pricing between 5,500 and 10,000 miles per segment. It was a very different story for premium cabins, where award prices are often high for airports like MIA, FLL, and PBI.

Individually, these weren't massive wins, but they consistently beat the cash price using Milesmate's Miles vs Cash math. Sometimes the best redemptions are the ones that make it easy to see friends and family.

    Estimated cash value saved: ~$1,000

Not every redemption needs to be a headline grabber. Taken together, this year was a good reminder of why collecting miles still works when you stay flexible and pay attention.

    One Last Thing

If you're curious whether a redemption like these actually makes sense for your own trips, this is exactly what our AAdvantage Cash vs Miles calculator is built for. It breaks down the math behind a booking and shows when miles are truly saving you money and when paying cash might be the better move.

Big international business class flights often steal the spotlight, but some of the most practical value this year came from smaller redemptions that simply beat the cash price. Running the numbers makes those decisions a lot easier.

Miles are only as good as how you use them. Knowing when to redeem them is where the real value comes from.
